In the years of the Great War, shipbuilders crafted a new generation of starships. Though starships have been traveling hyperspace for millennia, the technology propelling these ships is always evolving.
Later on, you can even purchase components with which to upgrade your ship, these include increased missile capacity, stronger shields, heavier armoring, etc. Republicans receive their ship at the end of the Coruscant storyline. Imperials receive their ship at the end of the Dromund Kaas storyline. As you progress along your class' story, you'll eventually be granted a starship that you can then use for interplanetary travel via the Galaxy Map at the bridge.
